Health Care

Congresswoman Emilia Strong Sykes believes all American families deserve access to affordable, quality health care. She is working to lower the cost of prescription drugs, expand access to Medicaid and Medicare, and combat health disparities in our communities. Congresswoman Sykes believes in the power of bipartisanship and that if both parties work together, we can substantially improve our healthcare system. A vocal proponent of public health, Congresswoman Sykes supports robust investments in critical medical research and healthcare services to improve the lives of hard-working American families. This also includes increased funding for the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Health Resources and Services Administration, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. As former Minority Leader of the Ohio House, Congresswoman Sykes helped create the first-ever Ohio Black Maternal Health Caucus to improve infant and maternal mortality.  Now in Congress, she continues to champion efforts to expand access to pre- and post-natal care for mothers, tackle racial bias in healthcare, and provide mothers and families with the support and resources they need to thrive. Congresswoman Sykes is a member of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, and a cosponsor of H.R. 959, the Black Maternal Health Momnibus Act, which makes critical investments in social determinants of health that influence maternal health outcomes, like housing, transportation, and nutrition. Congresswoman Sykes believes every American should have access to the care they need and have the autonomy to make their individual healthcare decisions. Healthcare is a human right.
